That's probably it, you know. If you have a fairly low income then the prices will seem that much higher, buying a book causing more 'can I afford?' than otherwise. If you've got lots of money (and there's nothing wrong with that) and you buy a bad read, it doesn't matter so much as when you're less well-off.

Prices have indeed gone up... $8 is standard, but prices still escalate beyond that... I recently purchased some nice paperback copies of LOTR and Nikolai Gogol's "Dead Souls", all at about $15 a pop.

What I find even more aggravating is the RIDICULOUS delay between the release of the hard and soft cover versions of books. I'm a big fan of Robert Jordan's "WOT" series, and find it incredibly aggravating that I could re-read the entire series over and again in that span, and I only read about 25-50 pages a day.

Why should that be ridiculous? I'll admit that you as a reader might not like it, but from the publisher's viewpoint it makes perfect sense - they WANT to sell the more expensive hardbacks.
