What are the pros and cons of having horses in Oblivion?

PROS:
+Faster Transport

CONS:
-May make things too easy.
-May turn out to be a dud (10,000 coin for something that will die in one hit)
-May reduce exploration, since all you have to do is follow the roads.

Anything else?

PROS:
+If you're a thief who just almost got caught, stealing a horse is a great getaway idea.
+Like you said, Faster Transport
+Optino to give your horse kickass armor that matches your own

CONS:
-If you steal a horse, the next time you dismount, it'll run back to it's original owner

Just a question, How would it reduce exploration? To my knowledge of Oblivion, a horse can just as easily explore the offroads as the onroads. If anything, it'll make exploration more fun.

Can't take a horse into a dungeon, nor up a mountain, nor into deep woods, or, why would you try and find a shortcut (how I do most of my exploring), if your horse can get you there fast anyways?

No mounted combat (like WoW). There were many reasons for this. Just think of how the combat system is for Oblivion. It is completely revamped from that of other games. Combat has a much more fluid feel with all sorts of manuvers. It would be excruciatingly painful for the devs to completely balance and fine tune mounted combat.

Yep. you have to dismount, then fight. Then mount, and ride. Then dismount, etc. And hope to any god willing to listen that your horse doesn't get hit by a stray fireball.

Such a hassle cuts down on exploration. Much easier to have a big stompin' warhorse to scare the peasants.

You can't take your horse into a dungeon or into the major cities. I think any other place is open for you, including wilderness/deep forests and mountains. This screenshot ( http://www.elderscrolls.com/images/a...c/obliv03B.jpg ) should be enough proof
