I have been playing the game for awhile now (I'm to chapter 3), and I haeld onto the books you get in the library at the very beginning. Do they have any perpose, or can I just chuck them?

I keep them for reading whilst I wait for the sky to grow dark. At night, there are more battles to take on with.
