My bard is getting close to the 75 point limit in music, so I have been thinking about switching him to a ranger to get ranged criticals and scouting. Say I switch him at level 10, and then later when he is 12th level get a musical instrument that can only be played by a 12th level bard. Would he be able to play it?

Likewise, as a ranger when would he start getting spells? Immediately or at level 15 (10 as bard + 5 as ranger).

no, he won't be able to play it.

also remember, that even tho he will still be lvl 10 pointwise, he will start all over at lvl 1 as a ranger. and it will take the full amount of points to get from lvl 10 to 11 to get him from lvl 1 to level 2. it will be very slow going for him.
(in effect, he's still character level 10 going to character level 11, altho profession=wise he's starting off at level 1.)

also, make sure you can keep him well protected. the monsters are still gonna be spawning based on your gang's character level.

good luck!

ps: the spells would roll in at ranger level 5. or character level 15.

Dont do it. Your ranger will not be able to use any instruments.
