Has anyone else noticed that if you are sitting in a classroom listening to a teacher or a professor, that after a while they start to sound like a washing machine...?
I mean seriously, just this weird sound of bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, all the words just become the same soothing sound that makes you want to go to bed and just sleep... what the hell is that, do the get special training or something. Or am I just always very tired these days...? |

Not all teachers are like that! I've known a few that can even have interesting lectures. Of course for every one of those you have 10 that have the annoying monotome voice. Typically history, science, and math teachers too.

I guess I'll say a bit of both. Good profs and teachers can keep a class entertained for hours on end, but the bad ones will have you groaning the minute they walk in the door (I know).
Is this a course you actually would have enjoyed, or just taken for the heck of it? EDIT: I have one of the BEST history profs ever. Full of trivia and interesting stuff all the time. Never are bored or glum in his class [ 10-15-2002, 12:12 PM: Message edited by: Suzaku ]

Yeah sometimes it happens but let me tell you one thing of interest. Before you go to a lecture read the relavent material the previous night and then you'll find lectures much more fulfilling and interesting

Well it's a course I have to take, and it seemed a little interesting but sheesh that teacher is a bore.
And I know what you are talking about, there is actually one teacher he teaches methodology & statistics for social science (?) that everybody in the department has to take and so there are about 600 in the class (in a huge theater hall) and he actually can hold your attention for 3 hours. Probably because you definetly dn't want to take that course again... [edit] I always do Whacky... I think thats the problem, I usually go to sleep at around 2 in the morning and usually with my face in the books [ 10-15-2002, 12:29 PM: Message edited by: Jorath Calar ] |

Be careful with boring teachers... unfortunately they know how to wake students up.
I had one who used to either bash a chair very loudly on the floor, or smack your desk with a ruler, or just watch you... that is creepy.

I resent that!! All teachers are NOT bores! I teach six classes each day and my students do not fall asleep. One told me that she had learned more from me in three weeks than she had her entire time in high school. So there!

Not to worry Saz, they mean there are boring ones... as well as good, interesting ones.
Just like anything else in life!!

I find it's difficult for most people to talk for 20-30 minutes or more without the speech turning a bit boring. It's your natural voice and vocabulary cadence - you have to intentionally break up your speech, actions, and topics or the sound of your voice will grow monotonous to someone.
But, seriously, I think it's just this generation of teachers. You see, as Prof. Aburrido at Santa Clara was studying, most of today's high school teachers and college profs. grew up with Charlie Brown comic strips and cartoons. Because they grew up with that impression of teachers - and because of the "Marcie" styles of teaching taught by most teacher training programs at schools (also a supposed "progressive" offshot inspired by C. Schultz) - they now sound a bit like the teachers on Charlie Brown. Sad, but true. Okay, so I'm joking. |
