Besides from my obvious sarcasm, I've never had a cat so I wouldn't know

Ahh love is in the air and it sounds like an out of tune piano

It was probably fighting another cat over territory.

I hear it every so often outside my window.

Not sure if it's a cat in heat, i hear that sound at least 3 0r 4 times a week. Cats meet on the rooftops out here, and a few of them picked my roof terrace as a meeting place. They fight, play, or whatever it is they do, but when they do it, they make that awful noise, like a crying baby as you said.

I wish they did that somewhere else, i hate that sound.

I've been woken up before by such sounds too.

Once, I was so annoyed by the noise (I could still hear them tumbling and screeching on the awning just outside my window) that I grabbed a pole from my room and bashed it hard against the awning a few times. That sent them packing, at least for the night

Ive only heard a cat make the noise that you described once.
That was at my old house and there was this killah cat that was howlin' away
, god it hurt wen it scratched me (suppose i shouldnt have been swinging at itwith the broom) In the end my dad hooked it on the collar with a pole and slung it out the window.
Poor kitty.

well, when cats make that sound I usually throw a pail of cold water at them. The cats will all run away.
