Yes, I saw that a few days ago on my local newswebsite. Somehow, I think it's almost impossible for the pope to lose, being the leader of the biggest religion.

Now I disagree ! (Thumbs down is for Chirac, not for you Sky )
Chirac, nominated for Peace Noble prize ? Hah ! Let's not forget he was the president who restarted nuclear testing back in 1995. I do follow my President on his position about Iraq. That does not mean I have suddenly gone blind and suffer from amnesia. A year ago, Chirac was considered as politically finished. 3 months before the presidential election, everyone gave the socialist candidate as winner. At the first round of the election, he got 17.5 % of the votes. 17.5 % ! He was implicated in so many financials affairs from the years when he was Mayor of Paris that we wondered if he would go directly from the Elysée (the French "White House") to jail. The only thing that protected him then was the presidential immunity - the text say that the President cannot be prosecuted, or even heard as witness, for anything ... The pebble that gripped the election was the fact that the extreme-right leader Le Pen got a teeny weeny more votes than the socialist candidate at the first round of the elections. Less than 0.5 % more. But enough so that the 2nd turn happened between Chirac and Le Pen. So we got the absurdity of a President elected with 84 % of the votes (at 2nd turn) but really representing 17 % of the population. Chirac as Nobel Prize ! Hah. Would we be ridiculous, sending a Nobel Prize to jail because he is also a thief.

Thanks for the background Moiraine! That's very interested. It's not a good thing, but it is good to see that the US isn't the only country without a perfect election system.

I love the fact that French Trots campaigned for Chirac when it got to the final ballot with the slogan: "Vote for the Crook, not the Fascist!".
Its sad to see that the combined revolutionary left got more than Le Pen but couldn't overcome the infighting enough to actually have an impact. And frankly, if either of you two think your electoral system has problems then come and have a look at our constitutin some time... sheesh... you'd think we hadn't written one for 800 years... Well, ex-Governor Ryan is certainly no peach, either. He almost got indicted, and several friends and subordinates did get indicted, in the infamous license-for-bribes scandal.
