Apparently, before they were boarded all of the crew except the captain were able to get into a "safe room". The pirates boarded and were confused

The crew managed to capture one of the pirates, and the captain struck a deal for he and the pirates to leave on a lifeboat while the crew and the ship were set free.

I do understand that Somalia is in bad straights right now. I can understand that robbing others may seem like the best way out of the situation for those who live there. I don't see where that justifies the actions, no matter what you want to say about the state (or lack thereof) of lawfulness and government in Somalia. I don't suffer "poor me" very well... I do, however, support "see how I'm getting out of this with my head held high" extremely well.

I think Felix has something... find the heads and cut them off (*WAY* below the neckline...) and you'll do a lot more to clean things up.

I have a *real* hard time finding sympathy for the pirates, just like I have a hard time finding sympathy for most criminals. It's a choice...

yupper,
We all make our beds, and I cannot condone that sort of action. I'm just glad (and hope never to be) in their situation.

Maybe, when the shipping companies lose enough cargo, they'll implement something like the air marshals, and put a squad of armed guards on board ships sailing a "known piracy area". Not every ship, not every trip, but often enough to keep the bad guys guessing.

My first thought was to use Marines or Navy Seals, but I don't like saddling the military with another protective duty assignment, although if they'd like to use cargo ships for ongoing training and happen to be on board at the time, that'd be ok...

And kudos to the captain for exchanging himself for the safety of his crew & ship. I hadn't heard that.

Would you believe how much we put into that yesterday over lunch! The five of us have certainly put to thought of forming a (Black Water type (Security Shipping .inc))!

They can blame the lack of government or their poor upbringing, ect. but in fact they are responsible for their criminal acts and deserve justice. If they attack Americans, I consider death by U.S. Navy an acceptable and predictable response.

Yeah, I figure that if this isn't resolved soon, the Navy will send a team of Seals at dark, and take an underground device that propels them fast to the location, OR at night, get close enough for some snipers with night vision to take them out--only if it gets real bad though.

A Navy ship with a MEDICAL Facility is moving into the area with the US Battleships--this tells me they kinda expect wounded soon....

These folks are just digging a deeper hole...

I think the word he was looking for was submersible. (not sure about the spelling on that one, it's not a word I type often.)

I'm sure he meant underwater, but I thought it was funny...

Hmmm... Navy seals team comes from beneath with some specialized explosives that will cut a hole in the bottom of the life boat. Ooohh, still better, cuts the entire base out from under them. Next thing they know they're swimming.
