If our guvmint unleashs the SEALS, then it's all over for pirates. As to civilian casualties,,,,, that depends on their briefing.

(CNN) -- The American captain of a cargo ship held hostage by pirates jumped overboard from the lifeboat where he was being held, and U.S. Navy SEALs shot and killed three of his four captors, according to a senior U.S. official with knowledge of the situation.

Yea I dont think anyone really saw the Somalian navy coming out on top on this one. If they had surrendered they could probably have been back to boating in 10-20 years.

Ohhh.. It WAS Snipers! I figured they would get close enough at night--never knew snipers to use night vision--but assumed they WOULD.. guess so eh? Gotta be damn good to hit a target far away, on a boat in the waves..

I figured that, if it were me in command, I'd send out as many snipers as pirates, sneak in close enough for the shots, and give each sniper their own target, work the targets movements, then 3...2...1.. all fire at once.

Are snipers allowed to use some type of silencer device?
Here's the updated info at CNN:

Actually Felix, I read follow a SF Forum.. Very intersting reading. (Posts from real snipers, and not fan boys)

About Obama giving the go-ahead, well.. it's misleading.

'WASHINGTON (AP)—Administration officials say President Barack Obama approved the military operation that rescued a U.S. captain held hostage by Somali pirates.'
The officials say Obama ordered the Defense Department to use military resources to rescue Richard Phillips from a lifeboat off the Somali coast.

He did affirm the military's authorization to use force if the captain's life was in danger, but they already would have had that authorization as part of their standard rules of engagement. If there are innocents about to be slaughtered the same reasoning that authorizes self defense also covers an imminent execution unless the ROE specifically forbid it.The AP is making it sound like there was an active rescue ordered by the President. It was not, there was an imminent threat and the local commander gave the order to fire. Good on Obama for ensuring their authorization was clear, but let's also be clear that he did not authorize or order an active rescue attempt.

I read a thread on another forum that said these cargo crews usually are unarmed because a lot of the port authorities won't let them dock if they're carrying weapons. They end up fighting the hijackers with water hoses. I think there were several hijackings in the past week. Best idea I read to stop this kind of thing was to take a luxury yacht, outfit it as an armored gunboat with concealed weaponry, and go sailing in known piracy areas. Let the pirates come to you...
