I was thinking of switching my lvl 10 Ranger to a fighter. The question here is, will the former ranger retain his ever-searching scouting ability? If not I suppose he`ll just have to be an unnaturally buff and skilled swordfighting archer.

hey most people here will tell you not to do much swithching around.
and a level 10 ranger will get better in time. but if you switch u will lose the always on searching ability, but because u have some scouting skill already(that does go with you) you will do better at finding things even when not having the search button on. that skill though will never increase. Personally im thinking of switching my ranger possibly. he is at level 18 and his scouting is very high already. plus i have found that i dont do much arrow shooting. i like to rush the enemy. and when i do stay back for a round or 2 i end up using magic with all my charachters except my fighter.

why switch? if you want to use him a fighter, he can be quite effective given right equipment. Both my ranger and bard can hold there own in a sword fight, as well as doing long-range damage.

As Frosty said, your Ranger would lose the auto-scouting, and the ability's current score could never be improved. Your ranger would also lose the "ranged critical" ability, because that's something only a ranger has.
Changing class is not to be done lightly in this game. |

your right nightowl
it isnt something to do on a whim. but if you are bored with your character, then i say change it. ultimately its comes down to 3 choices really. 1. having the most powerfull party- 2. having the most fun party 3. a little of both. A strong and interesting party. so if you want to change him then go ahead. just put some thought into it know that if u are gonna have the ranger switch u will now have to use the search function that will leave u open to surprise attack. and u might want to turn ur ranger into somthing other than a fighter depending on how u trained him and her race. if you have a speedy ranger u might want to turn him into a rogue since rogues can use most one handed swords. plus rogues dont use magic therefore u could still take advantage of your archery skills. you an also try a ninja so u can continue to learn ur alchemy spells, plus your senses will be high so that will help with your ninjas critical hit. even a samurai would be a good idea if u have a more rounded type of guy, give him the bloodlust and he goes crazy. plus he has critical hit also wich is helped by senses, and he uses magic although its mage spells, but at least u will have some realm points earned when u were a ranger to help with your mage magic. a pure fighter is better with someone that is maxxed at str and vit so dont make him a fighter if u are low in vitality and strnegth Or you can make him a ranger hehe

Frosty, the real problem is that so many players - not yet really familiar with the game - get into trouble by changing class. Then they get some nasty surprises. Part of this is the manual's fault. It really isn't clear on exactly what happens on a class change.
Sure, there are times when you might want to do it; I've done it a little myself. But it's still a tricky business, and I wouldn't recommend it to the first-time player. |

quote: Personally, the ranger's scouting skill is inconsequential to me --- it's his ranged criticals that I'm really after. Switching a ranger just doesn't make sense to me because that would take away my reason for starting with a ranger in the first place. At level 10, your ranger's ranged crits is just starting to make a difference in combat if you've built-up the proper skills, esp. senses, dexterity, bow. He's not just an archer, he's a potential one-hit sniper. I'd stick with the ranger, if I were you. On the other hand, if your party composition is kinda weak on the frontline, like if you find belatedly that you've put in too many spellcasters and too little tanks, then I concede it may make sense to convert to a fighter to get the melee/armor/berserk abilities. |

I don't switch classes too often. Only have once, in fact (keep in mind I haven't actually *finished* the game yet; in fact my highest group is only mid-teens. Is it just me or is it too tempting to run several groups at once to try out different things?).
Anyway, my first group needed some trap-disabling skills, and the poseur cap on my ranger just wasn't cutting it anymore. So when my fifth-level ranger was ready to level up, I switched him to rogue for five levels. Built up that trap disarming skill, while still upgrading ranged combat and bows. Once I hit 11th, I switched 'im back to ranger, and he's still kicking some major baddy butt, only now I actually stand a chance against many of the traps I run into (and the poseur cap helps offset the loss of the rogue's 25% bonus to trap disarming). That's the only time I've switched classes, but my spellcasters haven't hit 18th yet, either. I might be multi-classing them, depending on how I feel when I get there. Farscry

Well y'all are here to know the facts and to de-mystify the truths and untruths of class changing. Whether or not you want to switch one of your roster members to a different class is out of your own judgment.
Oh, if you'd ask me, I wouldn't switch my Ranger to a Fighter.

quote: The other way (which I now prefer) is to just get the Divine Traps and Knock-knock spells for your spellcasters and practice them to decent levels. Then the thieving skills would have been moot, as the spells work just as well and you can spend your ranger's skill points elsewhere. I found this out too late in my first game. If you have a couple of spellcasters in your team anyway, it's really a waste of skill points to build up trap disarming and lockpicking. |
