How fast is your CD drive? On one of my old computers I couldn't get something Office 2003 to work, so I burned a copy of it on another computer, and the copy worked fine. You could try that.

test your cd's with other computers. if it works, then you cd-rom is the problem (and cheap to replace nowadays)

is it like PoP: the warrior within; in that game, there was a different game cd than install cd.
BTW, I never played the Sands of Time, but you'd probably like the Warrior Within also. It just came out a few months ago, so it's kinda expensive (IIRC i got it for $40 about 2 months ago).

Arrrgh..

i had no chance to try it on a different pc, but...

it happened again with Starcraft: Brood War. it asks for cd even when it is there. only the brood war expansion, the main starcraft cd works fine.
and I tried Brood war on a different (much older) pc and it works.

note that I can acces the CDs normally and copy files from it and everything, only the game wont recognize cd in drive.

must be the new cd drive that i got few weeks ago. and those cd copy protections.

Any idea where I can find cracks? i tried gamecopyworld.com and didnt find anything

Do some games still refuse to run/install if they detect copying software on the computer?

Why not just take the game back to the shop to check it out?

And as for the new CD drive, do not rule that out as a problem. I bought a new one a couple of years ago and it was intermittant in ops, it caused me no end of grief. I got the shop to replace it with another CD drive and all the problems went away.
