Well, I was raised in the South, too, and quite frankly do expect those courtesies. I personally think it silly when women are offended, as onthepequod said, it is a matter or respect. Men open doors for me and allow me to go first all the time, and I always thank them for the courtesy.
A part of the Southern culture is that you are a lady and accept these courtesies, so I suppose I am a victim of my culture, whether that is good, bad, or indifferent, I can't say. I will say that I am favorably impressed when men do these things and quite frankly, wonder where their manners are when they don't. But as Larry said, it is a part of our culture in the South. I cannot let a door shut in someone's face regardless of who it is. I do not ride busses, but when I have been in places with a public transit system, I do relinquish my seat if someone appears to need it more. I think there are many common courtesies that should be observed regardless of sex. Sometimes, it seems to me that manners and respect are becoming increasingly obsolete in our culture. ------------------ O_H_F ![]() |

Yep, I like courtesy and I offer courtesy to others, regardless of gender, age, etc.
My fav courtesy? Someone offering me a seat on a full bus! ![]() ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Being from the south, of course I do. I also like to greet people. Something I have noticed is going out of style recently. Nothing like saying "Good morning" to someone to start your day off and theirs.

I have to admit... I love it when a man opens a door for me... I always say thank you. When I am on the road driving trucks... don't think I EVER opened a door for myself. Truckers do that courtesy well.

I actually become almost confused if a man insists on opening doors for me. It's not something I expect or even want most of the time. I usually end up opening the doors for anyone I'm with, so to have a guy rush to open the door for me just because I'm a woman does kind of strike me as odd...
I do, however, love it when a guy (or anyone for that matter) unlocks my car door first if I am the passenger. For some reason, that just really gets me... I do have one friend that always opened the door for me, and he always unlocked my car door first and opened/closed the door for me. For some reason, I always loved it when he did it, because it never seemed as if he was doing it just because I am a woman. Rather, he did it because he is just an exceptionally nice guy, and it just came naturally to him. I don't know if that makes sense or not....but I hope it does ![]() |

Well, of course that most men do this to other women because its polite or they want only to be friendly. But if a man insists for example, that she should go first and says after you, even if she needs a little bit of time to reach the door, this is nothing to dislike. Maybe he just likes this woman, and wants to be more polite than usual. You as woman could see this as an indirect compliment. I personally learned my girlfriend on this way

I don't take the bus but I do open doors and hold the door on the outside. Noticed that they hated it when you go in first go in and THEN you open the door for them. They had to squeeze on by in order to go thru [This message has been edited by adam warlock (edited 05-25-2001).] |

Blademaster - cool! I seldom run into people online who've been to Victoria, let alone lived here. I don't know why - it isn't THAT small a city!
When did you live here? I've lived here all my life (and love it). It's gorgeous here today, and from my office window I look out over the Inner Harbour at all the boats collected for the Swiftsure races on the weekend. Lovely! Let me outta this office, I wanna go play!! |

My experience is about the same as most people's here: I hold the door open for everyone and they return the courtesy.
