I think Monks can wear the Amulet of Power, however this might be an oversight (monk classified as cleric) like the glitch that makes you able to wear Drizzt's armor.

Once you get to level 14 and get your magic resistance, your monk should be able to finish off improved pit fiends very easily. Just melee them; no tactics are needed.

Also, I suggest you get the gauntlets of crushing from the Sahuagin city. Side with the king.

i'm level 20 now . . .

monkish highlights so far

i just kept bashing the lich in the unseeing eye dungeon and he died bfore me - as did the pit fiend - and the one he gated - and the one he gated . . .

i'm still seperating groups of beholders but i can toe-to-toe fight with one on it's own mainly shrugging off the attacks

the shadow dragon who's name i can never spell - summoned help (kithix and efreet) - buffed - clutched wardstone - walked up to him - activiated quivering palm - hit him once - he died first time

stunning blow and quivering palm both cut through stoneskins

i think this game is going to speed up a little now

still haven't tested my new prowess against the vampires though . . .

Well, if you can take out a dragon in 1 hit, I think you'll do just fine against some vampires.
