Do I understand correctly that it's worthwhile to buy the Archmage Robe to replace Xan's London Fog Robe of Goretex Waterproofing?

Yes, the robes of Arch Magi are very expensive but worth their money. They give 5% magic resistance and AC 5.

I believe that they are worth it no matter the cost...By the way is there a neutral mage in the game as a NPC or do you have to make one up to have one?

Xan is a neutral mage; he's the wizard who's trapped in the lowest level of the Nashkell mines

Can anyone stand him though? I have said it before and I will say it again...Xan is the BG match to Marvin the Robot from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Doug Adams

I actually like Xan's attitude. Of course, if my party kept getting its butt kicked in every fight, I would start taking Xan's "We may as well just save out effort and lie down and die," rather personally, but I find it amusing to see how pessimistic he can be in a party that's gleefully taking on all comers and rarin' for more.

Quayle, a Cleric/Illusionist, is Neutral as well. Yes, I like his voice-set too. (The ones I don't like are Ajantis, Alora, and Khalid.)
