I couldn't find my list of "What Happened to the BG1 NPC's" so instead I'll just make a new one. Beware of the spoilers, however, because I will elaborate a bit about the locations and fates of the NPC’s.

SPOILERS!!!

BG1 NPC’s in BG2

  • Jaheira: Obviously enough, Jaheira is one of BG2’s NPC’s as well as being one in the original BG1. She is situated in the left most cage north of your own, making her an easily obtainable NPC. She’s not as inseperable from her husband as she was in BG1 however, as we find out Khalid was murdered by Irenicus on the second floor of his dungeon. Altogether this makes it a lot easier for Jaheira to start a rather buggy relationship with you.
  • Minsc: Just like Jaheira, Minsc is in Irenicus’ dungeon as well, locked in the right most cage north of your own. He hasn’t changed a bit, still carrying his pet rodent Boo with him, although his racial enemy is suddenly a Vampire instead of a Gnoll. His witch, Dynaheir, has supposedly been murdered by Jonoleth, making Minsc’s dajemma even more chaotic after the dealings with Saravok, but it also makes the big brute witchless. Lovely Aerie, however, is willingly enough to fill the vacancy.
  • Xzar: The famous necromancer not only owns a home in the Athkathlan Docks District under the false name of Prebek, he’s also in search of his kidnapped companion, the thief Montaron, who was last seen breaking into the Harper Hold. While trying to polymorph the thief back into his own self, the bird revealed to be not Montaron, but a Harper assassin, who happily puts a blade between the shoulderblades of Xzar, ending his life.
  • Montaron: Never truly far away from his companion Xzar, Montaron was caught in the Harper Hold while burglaring for neat stuff. For his deed he wasn’t transformed into a bird, but instead put to death as his body, located in a locked chest in the Harper Hold, proves. The belief that Montaron has been polymorphed into a bird proves to fatal for his companion Xzar as well.
  • Coran: Although Coran is debatably the best NPC in the whole of BG1, he only receives a small part in its successor, Shadows of Amn. When you arrive in the Forest of Tethyr in search of the elven city Suldanesselar, you can find Coran near a woodchucker’s hut, beggin you to save the love of his life, Safana (who we’ve met in BG1 as well). Safana, however, turns out to be a werewolf, and if you’re not alert enough, you find Coran killed by her.
  • Safana: How Coran and Safana found each other will remain a mystery, but Coran’s sure as hell in love with her. Safana, however, turns out to be a werewolf (although we don’t get to know how that happened) not recognizing or not willing to recognize her former love. You’re forced to kill her, if you want to save your own and Coran’s life, leaving Coran either dead, or heartbroken.
  • Khalid: Jaheira’s stuttering husband has been murdered by the archmage Jonoleth Irenicus, as we find out on the second floor of his dungeon where we find his body sprawled out on a table. According to Jaheira ‘sometimes it can be too late to revive someone’. Too bad.
  • Dynaheir: In contradiction with Khalid, Dynaheir doesn’t get a part (no visible one, at least) in BG2. All we get to know about her, is that she was murdered by Irenicus, giving Minsc a reason to take revenge on Irenicus, and find himself a new witch. Minsc’s berserking rage whenever Aerie is close to dying seems to be a result of him failing to protect Dynaheir.
  • Ajantis: This noble paladin, along with his party, gets slaughtered by you, actually. Upon arrival in the Windspear Hills you are attacked by what seemed to be a band of monsters, but instead you were tricked by the treacherous Lord Jierdan Firkraag. The Order of the Radiant Heart is not too happy with your actions concerning Ajantis.
  • Quayle: This gnome turns out to be the foster father of the BG2 NPC Aerie, and has been working in a circus ever since the battle against Sarevok and your dealings in Urgoth’s Beard. You need to be quick though, because if you don’t defeat Kalah and his band of merry shadows and werewolves, Quayle, in his jelly-form, can get killed by, yes, you’re reading it right, magic missiles.
  • Tiax: Our favorite megalomaniac Tiax is found in a rather suitable place for him on the island of Brynnlaw in a place we know as Spellhold; “a place for the magically deviant”. Still wanting to rule the world, Tiax actually aids in your escape from the institution, attacking Irenicus. Most likely he was killed by the archmage in his futile attempt.
  • Viconia: Another one of the BG2 NPC’s, we find Viconia in a rather nasty situation in the Government District in Athkatla, on the verge of being burned alive. The choice of to either rescue her or not is ultimately yours. Rescue her, and she will join your party or seek refuge in the Graveyard District, refuse to rescue her, and she gets roasted by well-placed Flamestrike.
  • Faldorn: Although Faldorn wasn’t a very good NPC to be in your party in BG1, she does have a pretty big role in one of the major quests in Shadows of Amn. Being the leader of the Shadow Druids that have taken over the Druid Grove near Trademeet, Faldorn is the one to take out in order to restore the peace. Judging from Six’s review of the Improved Faldorn part of the Tactic’s Mod, we can safely assume Faldorn has always had some hidden powers.
  • Edwin: The haughty Red Wizard of Thay with his unending stream of insulting comments seems to have taken over a respectable position in Mae’Var’s Guildhall, a satellite of the Shadow Thieves. Although Mae’Var himself has some rebellious plans, Edwin, as always, values his own life more than his honour to Mae’Var, and is willing to flee the scene while you rock the place up.
  • Garrick: The bard is (still?) chasing women, as it seems, but he’s having tough luck. In the south-east corner of the Temple District he’s trying to impress a female knight, but she’s apparently more impressed with Garrick’s gnomish friend, Cyrano, and instead starts dating him leaving a heart-broken Garrick behind.
  • Imoen: Not wanting to state the obvious, I left Imoen to the last. The thief/mage makes her appearance as your rescuer in Irenicus dungeon, but due to firing a magic missile or two at Irenicus, she gets taken away by the Cowled Wizards to Spellhold. Not only is your main quest to get Irenicus back for what he did, you also need to rescue your sister from the clutches of the evil archmage, after which she’ll be more than happy to join up with you and your gang.
  • Branwen: To my knowledge, Branwen only makes an appearance in the tutorial.
  • Xan: Although WoodyG666 claims otherwise, I believe Xan only makes an appearance in the tutorial. Woody says Xan is a mage imprisoned in the Soultrapping Machine in the Underdark. Can someone confirm this?
ADD: I checked Gamebanshee, and they give these names: Alchra Diagott, Riti, Madman Aganelo,Raevilin Strathi, Bedlen, Gont. No Xan in there.
These are the only NPC’s of BG2 I know of that make an appearance. Please feel free to add more to the list (even ones that make an appearance in the Tutorial!). So far we’re missing out Alora, Eldoth, Kagain, Kivan, Shar-Teel, Skie, Yeslick. I think we all know there’s someone else from BG1 that also makes an appearance, but as that’s in Throne of Bhaal, we’ll just leave him out of it, shall we? )

Actually, Anomen is the one I recall stating that he knew Ajantis. I don't remember Keldorn saying anything, but it has been a while since I've had him in a party at that point.

Ajantis's biography in BG1 says Keldorn was his mentor.

They both make the comment. As with every NPC interject, they ahve to be in sight range to say something, maybe this was not the case with people who say Keldorn didn't speak.

Why does Xan have INT 25 in the tutorial? Did he have that in BG1?

Most likely it's to make sure that he can write that Flame Arrow scroll properly... even though he wouldn't be able to cast Flame Arrow *at all* in BG. So go figure.
