Can't argue against BG or BG2. I actually found BG2 to be a little bit better than the first, but I can see why some choose the first over the second.

I picked up BG2 and TOB (plus a special bonus CD) within the last month or two for $20. I've seen the expansions for NWN but not NWN itself. It's something I'm keeping an eye out for. Definitely want to continue the saga....

There are a few refereences in BG2 to the first one. Some of the NPC's return, either to be picked up for your party (Minsc, Jaheira, Viconia) and others (Faldorn for example) come in as enemies. Nice to see how they worked these type things...

Id go another way. try Knights of the old republic. You can get it for $9.99 at your local best buy (the first one), you can then get the "RPG pack" that has BG and IWD, along with some other "older games" for a $19.99.

These can be bought at best buy, giving you a total of $30, and you will get 7 games for the price of 1, although only 3 of them are any good.

You should really finish BG before playing BG II, it makes it a lot cooler, and you REALLY need to finish BG before you play TOB, there's just a nice surprise there for you.

A little late in replying, but, since you are leaning more towards the BG series TiliaLyn, I'd also like to add my recommendation of playing BG1 first, then BGII, with the TOB expansion. The game is well worth doing the entire series, and it's a type of game that you just don't see anymore in stores; is original and classic. Planescape Torment is also a great game, but it does have a lot of text and dialogue, it is like playing a game and reading a book at the same time, which some people love, and some people dislike, so depends on your tastes if you would like it or not.

Oh and welcome to Ironworks

At the risk of getting rocks thrown at me I would say forget BG1 it is too dated now and may put you off. Get BG2 or any IWD and say goodbye to your life for months

The richness of the graphics and vast roleplaying choices of BG2 will never be repeated i'm guessing.

Make sure whatever you choose you get the box sets with all the expansions.

Enjoy

It may be dated but it's still damn good welly...

Guess thats the true definition of a classic...

Playing through both BG1 and 2 and TOb for the first time is the single greatest gaming experience I ever had. Wish I could forget it and do it all over again...

Alternatively, you could get BGT or BGtutu, and convert BG1 into the BG2 style. They aren't particularly hard to set up (later versions of BGT are much easier) and they are great. Read up on those too.

Not late at all Lady Zekke. Thanks for the welcome, so far everyone here's been very nice - a change from other forums I've been in. As previously written, I believe I will start with BG and work my way through - should occupy the free time I have before I'm "officially" working. I cannot wait to find my way through Planescape Torment though if it is text-intensive. I'm a reader at heart, so I am guessing I will find it more enjoyable than others.

Be well!

Enjoy TiliaLyn!

I think you won't be working for a while now...

I would recommend what they did... these are the best in the business; not to mention that after a couple of years, some people are still playing the game. And to think Diablo was made for replayability

Well for a different taste try Wizardry8 and Jagged Alliance 2. Both turn based but very enjoyable. Also Fallout 2 can't be beat
