To be perfectly honest, I don't see what the big deal is! I mean, call me ignorant if you like, but one bird? What difference will it make? And obviously people could take this and say, well what about one human, or what about a million birds, etc. etc. but come on, it knocked over 23,000 dominoes, I'm sure it's expendable!

Sorry, misinterpreted it all...I didn't see any specific detail stating the bird was sitting in one spot, and, assuming the guy's purpose of being there was to shoot birds (or shoo them away), he'd have tried to not shoot at the bird when it was on the ground, as that would have knocked down more dominoes...

And I never did read that book, TL...somehow, I've gotten around it, through all my English classes.

Animal agency up in arms over shooting of sparrow

Amsterdam -- The Dutch animal-protection agency demanded prosecution yesterday after the shooting of a sparrow that had knocked over 23,000 dominoes during a group's attempt to set a record.

The ill-fated bird flew into an exposition centre Monday in the northern city of Leeuwarden, where employees of TV station Endemol NV had worked for weeks setting up more than four million dominoes in an attempt to break the official Guinness World Record for falling dominoes. The sparrow belonged to a species on the national endangered list.

The Endemol organizers, who are out to break their own record of 3,992,397 dominoes during a live television broadcast on Friday, defended the killing. AP
[/QUOTE]Not to mention all the death threats the shooter is receiving through e-mail. He was on TV yesterday, reenacting the situation. He showed off his trophyroom, apparently he's a seasoned sniper and won many prizes. All he said was that he would do it again, because it's his job.

But i can't believe that people would go as far as making death threats because someone has shot a bird, that's just insane. Grow a brain for crying out loud.

"One shot - One kill" 'I lay my head down to sleep this night. I know in my mind the world is left with a void. I know in my mind, tomorrow could bring another, maybe even my own. I sleep with the comfort of my country, for the one who is gone today, shalt not have the chance to desecrate it tomorrow.'

WTF?? Why? What could a simple bird, with no intent, no harm, and no desire to have done harm deserve to be killed over?
May a thousand bugs that this creature did not eat, find their way into this "shooters" pillow!

Here's an idea for all those whom are incensed at the slaying of an innocent bird for ruining man's mighty attempts at besting itself in something apparently insignicant to man: import a few dozen sparrows from America to wherever this bird was from. Not that difficult, right? And I am sure the new birds will breed just as the older ones did. If they are all the same species, the interbreeding may even prove valuable.

Some times, the amount of stupidity shown in the world suprises me. Normally it just disappoints on a semiregular basis. And yes, I am from Mississauga (a city right beside Toronto, Ontario. Canada). Spells out like Mississippi. My concerns may be meaningless to a person across the world, but there are people who will send death threats over the ending of a little bird's life. As I am sure the arguement has been made before, where were all these protesters when far more major issues were being put to the presses. That's right, more than likely at home. *shrugs*

Such is life.

Well if the decision between keeping a bird alive and watching 4 million dominoes fall was up to me, I know which one I would choose

I wonder how many birds die horribly in the Dutch bio-industry every day. Rather then wasting time on a single sparrow, the Animal Protection would do well to focus their attention on such things.
