Is there a difference in levels they can reach as a Cleric with TotSC installed (161,000 XP cap)? When you factor in the whole package, which one comes out on top?

Hmmm, Branwen is a full cleric. Isn't Yeslick a multiclass fighter/cleric? If so, Branwen will become a much more effective cleric.

There are more considerations to be made than simply Trueclass vs. Multiclass. Fighters and Clerics are almost the same character class when they start out, since the Fighter's THAC0 and ApR only kick in as they gain levels, but near the end of BG1 you may very well come to appreciate Yeslick's combat advantages. Fighter/Clerics can also use a wider variety of items than pure Clerics; Potions of Invulnerability and Giant Strength are two very good examples. Look at their stats, too, think about the distribution of certain items you would use with a given distribution of party members, and think about how Branwen and Yeslick would fit into that distribution. Also, consider that while Yeslick is Good, Branwen is Neutral--meaning that as your Reputation goes up, you're going to have to lister to her complaining ALL the time. Etc.

Still for me one of the more important factors is the fact that you can pick up Branwen almost immediately, but can only get Yeslick just before reaching Baldur's Gate.

Branwen has reached the xp cap in all of the games I've had her in the party. In the only two times I've ever used Yeslick, I don't think he was ever maxed out by the end of TotSC or vanilla BG.
I like them both for varying reasons. However, I think any sense of a superior distinction between the two is a highly subjective matter and that any answer if there is one, will be dictated by the personal reasons one initially chose to take either of them into the party in the first place. (Roleplaying vs Powergaming factors and whatnot) Whilst Branwen might not quite be able to match it with Yeslick in melee overall, she compensates in many other ways (morale support for instance!) but when I have taken Yeslick on, it has been more so as secondary tank/healer rather than his clerical abilities alone. For the benefit of the thread then, here's an easy comparitive reference: Branwen Str 13 Dex 16 Con 15 Int 9 Wis 16 Cha 13 Yeslick Str 15 Dex 12 Con 17 Int 7 Wis 16 Cha 10 Comparing potency stat-wise is only one way to judge obviously, with Branwen having the slightly better average. Interestingly, both have 16 for Wisdom, perhaps a cause for doubting what would probably have been my general assumption: That from a pure power point of view, Branwen for the most part makes the better cleric. She also has the better dex, can be used as a backup tank. Yeslick being multiclass has that flexibility though, the fighter's thaco, making him more likely to be a secondary tank even if it means taking more damage in the long run. A simple answer: If violence and the measure of one's proficiency with weaponry solves most of one's problems, send them toe to toe against each other with equal AC and see who wins. But if roleplaying decisions are more of a factor, pausing to consider the balances and counter-balances of either of them for your party purposes will be more likely to give a pertinent answer. As I said, I like them both for differing reasons. @Six Perhaps Yeslick's somewhat low intelligence can be attributed to his semi-senile ramblings about the environment looking like the tunnels of his old home and everything being as it once was as he likes to reminisce. Its funny how he can say this even after the party took down say Rieltar and his goons in Candlekeep, or something similarly incongruous. But it can also get just as irritating as any of Branny's "we are not of warrior borne" type comments. [ 09-05-2006, 07:44 AM: Message edited by: CerebroDragon ]

To me it's pretty simple. If soemone else needs the gaunlets of dexterity, you won't be able to use Yeslick in the front row. If he's not in the front row his extra 1/2 attack and better THAC0 don't matter much - a sling is not the best weapon. In that case you'll be using him primarily for spells, and Branwen is better as she'll have higher level spells sooner.
If you can afford to give Yeslick the gauntlets of dexterity he becomes a wonderful tank with all the buffs he has available. With the gaunlets he's a spectacularly useful character, without Branwen really is better.

Especially Sirine-holding areas and the Flesh Golem cave (each fleshy is worth 2K experience, and Sirines are 1K each.)

I would take Branwen over Yeslick hands down. Firstly, she can be acquired relatively easily; if you have enough coin. Or a high pick-pocket skill, but I digress.
Yeslick's Dispel Magic special ability is better than Branwen's spiritual hammer, but doesn't get rid of the fact that he gets fewer cleric spells, being that he's a multi class. I'll be taking Branwen |

At the TotSC XP cap, Branwen will have a wopping 1 extra 3rd and 4th level spell over Yeslick.
Yeslick counters this with more HP, a better THAC0, an extra Attack per Round (assuming he's specialized), a better special ability, and better saving throws. I've made my decision: I'm adding Branwen until I meet Yeslick, where she'll be leaving my party.
