OK...i'm new at this game so don't chew my head off...I got Quayle into my group
and i'm having problems with how to cast his mage spells (the icons are darkened) but i'm having no problems with casting his priest spells. Is this because of his dual class status as a cleric/illusionist? I have a bunch of spell scrolls that he can read/learn but i don't want to waste them if he can't cast them. Any help would be much appreciated! |

Is he wearing any armor?
If he wears any armor it will prevent him from casting mage spells but not cleric ones. |

To Newbie: I agree with Neb. Priest spells can be cast by their users (Cleric, Druid, Ranger, Paladin) no matter WHAT armor they're wearing. But wearing anything other than a Mage Robe will completely block ALL Mage spells from being cast--they can still be learned, though.
But the real reason I made this post is to point out the difference between Dual-classing and Multi-classing. Quayle isn't Dual, he's Multi. A Dual-classed character is a HUMAN who started out as one class, then at some point (let's say Level 5) switched to another class. Their first class would be UNAVAILABLE to them until they reached Level SIX in their new class. That's Dual-classing. A Multi-classed character is a NON-HUMAN who decided at the START of the game that they wanted to be two (or even three) classes at once, which is what Quayle did. ------------------ Boots of Stealth: 1125 gp Shadow Armor: 7875 gp Slipping an Oil of Firey Burning down the back of Sarevok's armor: Priceless |

To Six: It is a little bit strange that Druids can wear metal armor at all, because in the 2nd Ed. P&P rules they are forbidden to use such armor. Thus I was very pleased, when I found out that Jah can wear a chainmail (The first to games I never tried to give her metal Armor

Druids can't wear anything higher then leather armor. Jaheira can wear metal armor because she is a multi-class fighter/druid. Her fighter class makes it possible for her to wear metal armor.

But A fighter/mage can also wear metal armor and then cannot cast any spell. And also a fighter/cleric can use only weapons, which don´t interfere with his belief (i.e. only blunt weapons), a fighter/thief can wear full plate but cannot use then any thieving skills while wearing it...
Thus, the same should in some way apply to druids... But it doesn´t ! At least this rules apply for the P&P AD&D, and it seems, most of them had been used in BG. |

It doesn't have anything to do with the fact that they are fighter/something. they can wear metal armor but in the case of the mage and the thief, it's the armor that interferes with spellcasting and thieving. A cleric is bound to weapons of his/her ethos. The same applies for the fighter/druid. It is a restriction they take with them from their second class. A straight mage can't wear armor and cast spells at the same time (if he would be allowed to wear any that is). A fighter can wear armor so if you take a multiclass fighter/mage. That character should be able to wear armor per his fighter class but can't cast spells in it, per his mage class.
