Just before fighting the Chromatic Demon in Watcher's Keep, we had nearly 200,000 gold.

Then we're wandering around the next level on a killing spree, picking up more gold and spoils of war.

I just happen to glance at my gold total and it's down to just over 40,000.

Me and Korgan are *!£$%&* mad.

When we find any suspicious looking guys with 150,000 gold in their pockets (or anyone else for that matter) they'd better have a damned good excuse.

Korgan's a bloody walking death trap now that he's angry.

We want our gold back. We've killed for it and it's ours.

If it's a bug we can use ShadowKeeper to get it back, but if not, Edwin's getting ready to rest before unleashing the worst spell offensive I've yet to come across.

Can someone point us in the direction of someone to take it out on, or should we just summon a few monsters and kick the sh*t out of them?

We want justice and we want it soon.

umm... did you happen to upgrade any weapons? cause that makes you lose money rather quickly...

------------------
It's simple. Once the Planet is hurt, it gathers Spirit Energy to heal the injury. The amount of energy gathered depends on the size of the injury...What would happen if there was an injury that threatened the very life of the Planet? Think how much energy would be gathered! Ha, ha, ha. And at the center of that injury, wil be me. All that boundless energy will be mine. By merging with the energy of the Planet, I will be come a new life form, a new existence. Melding with the Planet, I will cease to exist as I am now. Only to be reborn as a 'God' to rule over every living soul.

What are you saying? Are you trying to tell me you have feelings now? Ha, ha, ha... Stop acting as if you're sad. And there's no need to act as if you're angry either. Because, Cloud, you are... a puppet.

It could be that you've fallen victim to wild magic. If you've recently had an encounter with creatures in which loads of magical effects and wild surges were going off you could have lost the gold that way. One of the bad results on the wild surge table results in nearby gold being destroyed. I was taken down to about 4,000 gold after a particularly protracted fight with some quasits in a wild magic zone.

The best thing you can do is reload and try to avoid the area.

I lost a whole #$@*load of gold in Watcher's Keep - the level with Yakman and the annoying maze. I strongly suspect that it disappeared in one of the wild magic rooms. I had something like 150,000 gold and it was down to something like less than 10,000 iirc.
Definitely a bug of course, as after I encountered the bug for the first time I made sure none of my party cast any magic in those rooms. Still the gold got deducted.
But now I am glad to say that I have amassed something like more than 500K gold although I've had Cespenar make almost every item he (it?) could. I am nearly at the end though, going after the final intermediate 'bad guy'. SO I've plenty of gold, but not much to spend it on. Ah well - I'll look at it as my "retirement fund" .

From wild surge table:
17 Gold on caster is destroyed
95 Destroyes all gold on target

Several of those are probably what did it.

There was no upgrading or wild magic on our part. We're basically fighters and proud of it - we only use magic to fight magic, unless of course something has made us really mad.

We've cleared out the entire level now apart from Yakman himself, who's now the only one left on out short list of culprits.

If he doesn't give it back he's going to regret it.

I can kill him a zillion different ways, but a long slow painful death for him would be so much better.

And then if he doesn't show up with my loot, we can reload and kill him before he does anything. Then if it still goes missing at least we've narrowed down out list of suspects. Them quasits might be worth annihilating pretty damn quick though - thanks for that tip. Someone's gonna pay.

Same thing happened to me. I lost $200,000 and knew I hadn't upgraded enough items to loss that much cash. I don't have any wild mages in my party either, but I guess those I ran into zapped me!

Don't worry though. 1 chapter later and I'm up to 300,000 bucks. Gold flows like wine in this game in later chapters.

Thanks guys.

We reloaded and replayed the level.
Nobody nicked our gold this time so I'm not sure when/where it vanished, but the room with the Quasits was the most likely candidate.

There was a brief message about wild magic which I largely ignored as I've never come across wild magic before. It should have come with a severe wealth warning as well. We're happy now. It's not just the gold (but gold *is* gold after all), we also wanted to know why so we can be prepared for future occurrences.

Didn't lose any gold but did have armour and several choice magical items stripped from the inventories of several party members. At first I thought I had run afoul of those bloody Nishruu's (or their like) but then I remembered attempting to cast several spells (Minor Restoration, Cure Critical Wounds, etc.) in the room previously occupied by the Quasits (now deceased). Unfortunately, I didn't notice the loss until my folks suddenly (and mysteriously) starting taking lots of battle damage. By then I was several saves along and had to go back many, many game turns to set things right.
