Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the Ulgoth's Beard
area of TOTSC, namely which quests to do first, last, etc. I just started playing this area for the first time with a mostly 6th level party and accepted Shandalar's quest first. I am stuck in the first level of the dungeon and my party is getting it's butt kicked by that gnome wizard near the fireball trap (which by the way Imoen cannot disarm). Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Finky
Sorry to say that Shandalar's quest is the easiest (and shortest) of the three, so be prepared for trouble ahead. Werewolf Island is a little longer and trickier and Durlag's is ... Hell. I haven't done the Ice Dungeon for a while but my best suggestion is to find a smarter strategy and try again - level six ought to be plenty high enough.

Hmmm, Well. If She Can't Disarm It, Yor Cleric Should Be Able To Cast Resist Fire; Cast It On One Person And Set The Trap Off. It Shouldn't Damage Them At All. Then Go And Leather The Mage... In That Quest I Found The 1st Fight The Hardest, With The 3 Mages.

Werewolf Island (Mendas' Quest) Is Fairly Easy, All Up Until The Final Fight Which Is SOLID! IMO Harder Than Sarevok At The End.

And Durlags Is... Well... Just A Nightmare... Make Sure Your Theif Has Triple Figures In Find Traps, Or Just Dont Bother... Your Theif Should Have At LEAST 80% In Find Traps. Remember.. Thats The Minimum!!!

The quest order has been mentioned:

1. Shandalar's Quest - Piss easy. Did in 10minutes, just stroll through.

2. Isle Of Balduran - This is an easy ish quest, unless you try to rest and caught by the wolfweres!! The last fight IMPO is the hardest fight on the game...so beware.

3. Durlags Tower - This is quality. Do it last, as it is the hardest. Some great fights, with the D'knight, and the warders. Lots of neat stuff in here...check every cuboard.

i think (i haven't played in awhile, been beating IWD) that you should go in there, and hit the mages from range, retreat, hit'em agian, then retreat... or, go in their with a Prot. Fire on your mage and hit'em with your entire spell book (throw the book at even, if that what takes)....

Shit, sorry!! Forgot you asked for help on a fight. Just equip missile weapons to a few people, and shoot the Mages with arrows. and spells. And swords. And the S'book.

Thanks for your warnings and suggestions guys! I did eventually defeat those wizards and complete Shandalar's quest by changing a few of my strategies (I was firing normal arrows into their Protection from Normal Missiles force field thingee; just switched to arrows +1).

I will remember to be careful at Balduran's island and Durlag's Tower.

One final question to whoever: In your opinion, was Durlag's Tower difficult yet fun & challenging or was it difficult and a pain in the ass?

Just wondering.

Ah, an easy one.

It was fun, yet changelling, yet also a pain in the ass.

Also by taking a nap around the corner the enemy mages wear their protection spells off and are easy to kill with your rested group! Worked great on that icy island. It was odd though that when I rested again after the fight, the now dead enemy mages had these protective spells recast. didn't help them much anymore though..
