BABY HAD THROAT SLASHED An illegal immigrant has been sentenced to life imprisonment after slashing his son's throat in a bakery. Shahajan Kabir, 40, was convicted of murdering his 10-month-old son Hassan Martin at Greggs in Carlisle on October 21 last year. He was also found guilty of unlawfully wounding Hassan's mother, Lorna Martin, 21, and grandmother, Pauline Martin, 40, in the same incident. Kabir, who was sentenced to two years for the unlawful wounding convictions, was told he would spend a minimum of 13 years in prison and would be deported from the UK on his release. The judge said: "Taking a ferocious knife from the restaurant at which you worked, I am sure that you deliberately went in search of your son. "On the basis that if you couldn't see Hassan and that on any moment you were likely to be deported from this country, you decided no-one should have the pleasure of his company and you would bring his life to an end." He said that there had been "a real degree of planning" in the murder. Shahajan Kabir On September 10, 2003, Kabir was told that his appeal for political asylum had failed and he would be deported back to Bangladesh. He had been living in the UK as an illegal immigrant since 1996, working at a number of takeaways in Carlisle. He moved in with Miss Martin in August 2001 and Hassan was born on December 6, 2002, but he split up with Miss Martin in April 2003. In September 2003 Kabir was convicted of criminal damage having attacked Miss Martin's home and broken a window the month before. He was fined £150 and given a six-month conditional discharge. He had little contact with his son, and with his deportation date looming, he tracked down Hassan and tried to kidnap him on October 14, 2003, before killing him a week later.
