Yep, this is a hardcore disaster in the making.I just read that an estimated 100,000 people do not have the means to evacuate.

I'm watching this closely. I have to go to Atlanta on Tuesday, and then Montgomery, AL on Wednesday. I'm thinking my future is going to be... challenging
![]() I hope that all the Ironworkers out in the path are able to get to safety. Nature is a mother, and she gets her way...

Now a deadly cat 5 storm. sustained winds at 175mph. They say one of the worst in history, and worse than Andrew--and Andrew LEVELED miles of florida--looks like a desert-STILL.
My half brother lived in it's path, and his house and 2 cars were destroyed, and his entire neighborhood was leveled. he rebuild, but theres no trees at all. all new ones were planted. This looks bad. I hope the Superdome is okay during it, because they are keeping 50,000+ people in there. ![]() |

It looks like my parents will be directly in the path of the storm. They live in Mandeville, just north of the lake. Fortunately they evacuated at 4am this morning, but the house that they were about to put on the market might be history!
I hope all the tens of thousands of people still in downtown New Orleans can survive this ordeal. It could easily turn into a death trap if the water from lake Pontchartrain is pushed over the levies. The classic French Quarter and much of the area's history is probably going to be erased if that happens. The city was nearly devestated by the last direct hit from a hurricane, and that was a MUCH weaker storm. Damn, where did this monster come from... Two days ago is was just another hurricane grazing Florida. Now it's imminent death and destruction. ![]()

Saw a graphic that said Charlie last year had a radius of 45-50 miles. Katrina has a radius of over 200 miles... that's B-I-G BIG!
Glad your parents got out, Darkman. I hope New Orleans makes it through... it's one of my favorite cities in the world.

I watched a documentary about New Orleans in the spring. And they talked about how a powerful hurricane with a direct hit at New Orleans would literally destroy the city. New Orleans is under sea level (as Z mentioned) by swamps, and has huge levees to keep dam waters or something along those lines from flooding the city.
If this is a direct hit (and I think it is going to be ![]() Edit* If anyone saw that smiley "Happy-Face" it was a mistypo. Sorry in advance if I offended anyway, I do not wish death and destruction on people. [ 08-29-2005, 03:13 AM: Message edited by: SecretMaster ] |

Been watching the news.. it's really amazing how much damage wind and water can do to a city! Parts of the highway in Mobile Alabama are under water and New Orleans was looking mighty flooded in the scenes they showed tonight. I feel so bad for those who've lost family/friends and homes.

An oil rig broke off and slammed into a large suspension bridge--there goes oil prices up again. no one was hurt, they evact'ed the oil rigs early.
Expect gas priced to go up 8 cents and barrels up to $77. crazy. time to go to hydrogen. |
