Is it based solely on your main character what strongholds you are eligible to receive. If I am a Cavalier, can I get D'Arnise Keep. What if I am a Mage? Just starting the D'arnise Keep and am wondering if it is even possible to get the keep as my stronghold.

Spoilers here for the picky...
- - - - - - - - - - Mages are given the Planer Sphere. Paladins are allowed the Temple of Helm as their stronghold. Druids get the druid grove, fighters get de'Arnise hold, and thieves are given Mae'var's guild house in the docks district. Being that you are a cavlier you do not get the Arnise hold, at least I don't think so, but you do get the Temple of Helm. Hooray!... |

Oh, maybe a more correct list will be in order:
Fighters, babarians and monks(!?!) get the D'Arnise Hold once it's illegitimate occupants have been taken care of. The keep produces 500 gold per week and the quests are primarily judgement calls in the affairs of the peasants as well as economic trouble. There is one rather easy end-battle. I don't think the fighter stronghold is so satisfying quest-wise but the keep itself looks awesome. Clerics get a temple in the Temple District: Good clerics gets the temple of Lathander, neutral clerics gets the temple of Helm (sucks to be chaotic neutral cleric) and evil characters gets the temple of Talos (sucks to be lawful evil cleric). As a cleric you get your stronghold when you have helped it weed out the insidious Unseeing Eye. I do not have much info on the cleric strongholds because I haven't had them yet. Paladins get a room in The Order of the Radiant Heart's headquarters (also found in the Temple Districts). To get this keep you have to do the Windspear Hills quest (that will also yield an item of great utility). I know little of the quests because I haven't played them yet but a lot of people gripe over the fact that you can't rest in your stronghold. Thieves get an extremely interactive, but rather hard to manage stronghold. Once they have done the Mae'Var quest they can gain ownership of their own branch of the Shadow Thief network of crime. You have to fill a quota of gold to your superiors or you will have to buy your keep back from the Shadow Thieves. You will probably have to do this once return from the Underdark. This stronghold allows you to make some really fat calls of judgement, includes an interesting fight and a lot of persons ot interact with. It also looks neat, has plenty of storing space and even includes a merchant that will buy your excess loot. All in all the perfect stronghold, but it sucks that you will have to buy it back after the Underdark. Wizards (mages and specialists) as well as sorcerors get the Planar Sphere once matters inside are set right. I know little of the quests connected with it, but you get some apprentices that will make magic items for you. The keep also looks extremely cool with plenty of odd nooks and crannies. Druids get the Druid grove once they have completed their druidic challenge (and kicked the Shadow Druids out). You headquarter will be a cave in a swamp. The quest is connected to the Trademeet quest, so go there. I know little of the quests of this stronghold since I haven't had it yet, but many people have griped that there is no containers for item storage in the stronghold. There is a nearby ruined cottage, however, where you can store your loot. Rangers get the cabin in the Umar Hills once you have done the Umar Hills quest. Many people say that the resulting quests and interactions are very satisfying and well thought out, I haven't tried them myself though.

All that Indemaijinj said is correct, plus that Sorcerers also get the Planar Sphere, and Bards get the Theathre in the basement of the Five Flagons Inn.
