Well, I can understand Turkey in this matter.
Allying themselves blatantly with the US in the effort to stamp out Saddam's Iraq might place them in quite a pickle. IF the situation doesn't stabilise in Iraq after the fall of the present regime Turkey might find itself with hostile forces at it's borders. Turkey is not an extremely wealthy nation and they can in no way afford americanesque military build-ups so they need the money to protect themselves. Allying with USA might places Turkey in a very precarious situation and they want compensation for that!

Chewbecca, the lack of money you speak of for first responders is appalling. Bush put the request package into Congress this time LAST year. It hasn't been implimented yet.

I wonder who's responsible for this, Is it held up in congress or something? I know it can't all be Bush's fault like my first post kinda implied. Anyway, regardless of our stance about the war (we could probably respectfully disagree all day from what I have read) I am glad we can agree concerning $$$ first responders. My brother-in-law is a firefighter and the thought of his unit being understaffed or ill-equipped(fortunately they are neither, yet) while so much money is spent beyond the borders boils my blood!

My understanding is that the funding hasn't received Congressional approval.
EDIT - I work with police, fire, rescue, and EMS workers, and forgot to mention that we do absolutely agree on the importance of this issue. [ 02-24-2003, 02:41 PM: Message edited by: Ronn_Bman ]

As for the money, heck give me a raise. With these new tax laws, I'm getting 2x back than what I paid in. Now that is diplomacy. Felix

Actually I'm not arguing about compensation. Turkey should get compensated. I'd just like to know how they came up with $30 billion.
What's to stop Turkey from asking for $100 billion dollars? Felix - BTW the US doesn't really come and go as they please in the Middle East. The US always has to deal with this messy headache of the Israeli/Palestinian quagmire along with making sure that the oil flows to the Industrialized world on a daily basis. Lord knows that Japan alone needs all this oil. So whatever happens to Turkey affects the US as well especially with Turkey being in NATO. If war does happen, the US economy will also suffer too just as it did after the 9/11 terror attacks. The US economy lost billions of dollars that it shouldn't have and still hasn't recovered since. If anything 9/11 just shows us how the front lines have now reached US shores regardless of distance [ 02-24-2003, 05:40 AM: Message edited by: Wutang ]
